Overview

  • The Public Finance Group is consistently ranked as the No. 1 bond counsel firm in the United States, having led the nation in total volume of financings and ranked first as bond and disclosure counsel for most of the past two decades.
  • In California, the team was ranked the No. 1 bond counsel firm in 2025, serving on transactions aggregating over $38.25 billion, representing nearly 50% market share of all bond issuances.
  • The group handles the full spectrum of financing matters for a diverse client base, including state and local governmental entities, 501(c)(3) organizations, investment banks, bond purchasers, and developers.
  • Matters handled by the group encompass municipal bonds, notes, and other obligations (tax exempt or taxable) for public infrastructure, capital improvement projects, public noncapital programs (e.g., deficit, cash flow, pension), nonprofit facilities (e.g., healthcare, educational, low-income housing), for-profit projects (e.g., water, energy, multifamily housing), and Indian Tribal financings.
  • The group's scope also includes IRS audits, SEC investigations and enforcement actions, secondary market repackagings (including tender option bonds), securitizations, public-private partnerships, bankruptcies, and work-outs.
  • A strong transactional background and experience in public finance transactions, the UCC, and securities law are considered a plus, but are not required due to the availability of a robust on-the-job training program.

Johnathan Vaknin joined Orrick’s Los Angeles office in the Intellectual Property group.

I worked with Summer throughout my lateral associate move and can't recommend her highly enough. She took the time to understand what I actually wanted out of my next role and surfaced niche opportunities I wouldn't have found on my own. She was also a steady guide through the trickier parts of the process: navigating conflicts checks and managing the notice and transition period at my previous firm. Her advice was practical, her communication was prompt, and I always felt like I had someone in my corner.

Donna Long joined Orrick’s San Francisco office in the Litigation group.

Kate is fantastic to work. She was proactive about getting me the opportunities I wanted and always working towards my best interest. She brought a wealth of knowledge of the legal industry, especially in the Bay Area, which was helpful for a junior lawyer trying to navigate the job market. She very attentive to my needs and assisted me throughout the transition. I could not have asked for a better experience!

Luba Lerner joined Orrick’s Los Angeles office in the Labor & Employment group.

I worked with Dale to find an opportunity in the biglaw market and I'm so glad I did. Dale came recommended to me from a friend/colleague. Dale was kind and personable from the start. He listened to my needs and wants when discussing the type of opportunity I was interested in. Throughout the interview process, Dale offered extremely helpful tips and advice that I would not have had if I did not work with him. He is super knowledgeable and has a keen ability to find job seekers a perfect fit. He was honest when he described certain opportunities and work cultures--which I really appreciated! I did not feel the pushy-ness that some other legal recruiters may exude onto candidates. I could tell he is also very well-respected by firms that he recruits candidates to, which is super helpful. He was in constant communication with me through the whole process. Dale is a real professional. I am so happy to have met and worked with Dale, and have already referred him to several friends looking for opportunities. Thank you, Dale!
