Overview

This is a mid-level associate position within the State and Local Tax (SALT) group, based in Palo Alto, California.
The role focuses on complex California property tax, including property and transfer tax planning for acquisitions, dispositions, exemptions, and exclusions.
Work also involves controversy at all levels, from local assessment appeal boards through appellate courts.
The practice covers a broad range of real and personal property types (e.g., commercial, industrial, large-scale residential) and industries (e.g., high-tech, renewable energy, real estate investment, life sciences, healthcare).
Responsibilities include legal and factual research and analysis, case management, valuation strategy, legal writing for diverse audiences, oral advocacy, and frequent client interactions.
Required qualifications include a JD from an accredited U.S. law school, bar admission in at least one U.S. jurisdiction, and willingness to sit for the California State Bar.
Previous or current employment with an Am Law 100 or top accounting firm is preferred.
Experience in property tax, valuation, real estate, SALT, and/or litigation is strongly preferred.
Key skills include strong interpersonal, oral and written communication, analytical, and time management abilities, along with proficiency in Excel and comfort working with numbers.
The California base pay range for this role is $260,000 – $435,000, with the final offer dependent on skillset and experience.
